Course Description

Geography has become an increasingly important topic in our ever shrinking world. Just as we must know and understand our own culture and nation, we must also have an unbiased understanding of other nations and cultures to function in a multicultural, global environment.

 

This year in Social Studies 9th grade students will be studying Geography.  We will be using the Textbook, Geography Alive! Regions and People. (Teachers’ Curriculum Institute)

Grading Scale – The total points you earn in a quarter are divided by the total points available in a quarter to determine your final percentage.

Ø      100-93 = A

Ø        92-90 = A-

Ø        89-87 = B+

Ø        86-84 = B

Ø        83-80 = B-

Ø        79-77 = C+

Ø        76-74 = C

Ø        73-70 = C-

Ø        69-67 = D+

Ø        66-64 = D

Ø        63-60 = D-

Ø        59-0   = F

 

Ø      Extra Credit is available and student generated extra credit opportunities are encouraged. Credit is determined on a case by case basis.

 

Class Policies/Expectations

Ø      We will follow the attendance and tardy policies as outlined in the student planner.

Ø      Follow all school rules.

Ø      School-wide behavior expectation regarding language, cell phones, electronics, dress code, food and academic honesty will be enforced in this class. We will follow the policies set out in your planner.

Ø      Students are allotted three passes per quarter.

Ø      Come to class on time everyday.  Late students must have a late pass in order to enter the classroom.

Ø      Bring all necessary materials to class every day:  Textbook, notebook, pen/pencil, warm-up folder.

Ø      Come to class prepared to learn and ready to work hard.   Be your best and always do your best.

Ø      Turn in assignments on time.

Ø      Your work should be your work and not copied or completed by someone else.

Falsified work will not be accepted and result in zero points for that assignment.

Ø      Be respectful towards yourself, others and property.  Clean up after yourself.



Books:

Each student will check out a Geography textbook from the Media Center that s/he will use for the entire school year.  Each student will also have a student notebook that contains activities related to the different chapters in the textbook.  It is absolutely essential that if a student takes a book home s/he bring it back to class everyday for use in the classroom.  Each student is responsible for the return of the book at the end of the year or before he or she leaves our school.  It is the responsibility of the family to replace or cover the cost for replacement if the book is lost or stolen.

 


 

Procedures:

Be in class on time with all materials and sharpen your pencil before class starts.

Every day you will have a warm-up on the board or overhead.  I expect you to start on this assignment at the beginning of class each day.  All of the warm-ups must be kept together in a folder.  It is extremely important that you keep these together and complete them every day.  You will have a quiz based on your warm-ups every two weeks.


 

Missed Work Due to Absence:            

Make up work due to an absence is your responsibility as a student.  Please come to me to collect missed work.  I will not track you down to give you assignments. 

An assignment due on the day a student is absent will be due the day the student returns to school.

 

Late Homework:

Late homework will receive a grade reduction if turned in after the due date.  

Late assignments will not be accepted after 1 week from the due date. 

Late homework may not be corrected as promptly as homework turned in on time.

Late homework might be lost since it is not with the rest of the homework assignments.
