Course Description 
This introductory art course will develop student's abilities to see and perceive as an artist “sees”, that is, in a “right-brain” mode and to develop their abilities to record those perceptions with increasing accuracy while maintaining and enhancing their own style and creative voice.  Basic techniques and styles of drawing will be taught through various media and through specific exercises and assignments meant to build the student's ability to access this different mode of seeing and perceiving.  This mode of thinking and seeing will help students in all other areas of the curriculum and teaches critical and creative thinking skills. Students will learn a working knowledge of art vocabulary and of some history of drawing/art from diverse cultural and stylistic perspectives.  They will also gain practice in the artistic process including critiques and revision/refinement of work to create effective compositions that express their individual voice/style/message.

Course Objectives
Students will increase their:
  • competence and confidence in their own artistic and creative abilities
  • technical skills, skills of observation and practical aspects of visual arts that will allow them to incorporate ideas into their own work
  • ability to see and perceive in a more holistic way which will allow them to more realistically represent and render their perceptions and be better thinkers and problem-solvers
  • knowledge of the specialist vocabulary and priciples of the visual arts and of drawing
  • understanding of art styles, movements, artists' practices and “habits of mind”, and specific artworks
  • understanding of the creative process including the process of evaluation/critique/reflection, and the process of revision/refinement.
  • knowledge and understanding of the role visual arts play in society, and a cultural and historical awareness of this
These objectives meet the requirements of the MYP in IB and also address the Minnesota State Standards in Visual Arts strands I, II, III, IV.

What you should bring to class (Required Texts and Other Supplies) 
1.  “The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards, 1999 edition
 ***(It is strongly recommended that the student acquire this text for use at home and to do assigned reading, however, it is not  required. .  The reading will  be handed out as copies if student does not have the text.)

(REQUIRED) Students must bring planner, ID, multiple sharpened #2 pencils,  pencil sharpener, erasers and Positive Attitude
(IF DESIRED – NOT REQUIRED) 4B and 6B pencil, kneaded eraser, sketchbook

Paper, tools, supplementary materials, reference texts and books and other materials will be provided.  Students will respect the use of any tools and equipment used in the art room.  Students misusing materials or off-task will lose points, be asked to leave for that class period and possibly replace any damaged materials.

Homework

There will be weekly reading assigned from the text.  It is important to keep up with the reading because it relates to the upcoming discussions, activities and lessons in class.  Reading will be assigned on Monday and is expected to be completed by the next week.  Students will be expected to respond to the text by different written assignments and reflections on the reading.  They will turn in these reading reflections on the Monday following the reading assignment.

Student is highly recommended to acquire a sketchbook to continue with exercises and practice with new drawing skills at home.  The more the student practices, the faster perceptual and thinking skills will increase and become permanent in the brain.  This is not required, just highly recommended.

Grading Policies  
Grading Criteria: Grade is based on a “point-based” system.  Students will be given opportunities to score the highest points possible by meeting all criteria presented in class.  Points may earned by:
  • Reading assignments (written reflections) –  will be graded on a 10 point scale based on the criteria of completeness, coherence, effort level and legibility.  (15% of overall grade)
  • Good daily attendance:  Ten points are earned each day based on following directions, active participation in class discussions (reading assignments, reflections on work, etc.),  note-taking, sketching, materials preparation, timely work on assignments, engaged participation in critiques, positive attitude and respectful behavior including proper clean-up and care of materials:  in short,  best effort in all classwork and activities  (35% of overall grade)
  • Studio work: (classwork and final drawings) : Points are based on the following criteria:
    • expression and communication of artistic intentions / authentic voice
    • skill and technique / craftmanship / control of materials
    • artistic process : create/ present / evaluate / refine
    • art historical, cultural and/or personal influences evident in work
    • effort / completeness / on time
    •     (50% of overall grade)
Grading Scale:  Standard grading scale
93% A,  90% A-, 87% B+, 83% B, 80% B-, 77% C+, 73% C, 70% C-, 67% D+, 63% D, 60% D-, 59% and below F.

Missed class points can be made up in tutorials offered each Tuesday after school in room 163 from 3:10-4:00 pm.

Class Policies/Expectations

Attendance – District  8 day fail policy:  Students absent 8 or more days per quarter will earn an automatic F grade which can be appealed by the teacher for students who earned a 70% or above grade  and have not missed course work.  To make up course work,  tutorials are mandatory for all students missing 4 or more class periods, to make up studio work and classwork.
  
Tardy policy – Students with a pass will be admitted within 5 minutes of the start of class.  If you are later, without a pass, you must report to security and face the consequences that are determined for you there.  Do not knock on door or otherwise attempt to disrupt class.
  
Passes – 3 per quarter from your planner, no passes in the first and last 10 minutes of class

Statement on scholastic honesty – Please refer to Patrick Henry High School policy for full details.  In art class, suffice it to say that all work, including drawings and written work, must absolutely be authentically yours and yours alone.  I will be able to tell if your voice or style changes and you will be held accountable for any infractions of this rule. Also, all sources for written and studio work must be properly cited.  This includes copies of any artwork which you may draw.  You must cite your source.

Behavior - Students will follow Patrick Henry High School behavior expectations as listed in the student planner.  Details of behavior expectations and consequences will be posted and thouroughly discussed in class.

Classroom expectations – Students will show proper respect and use of materials, tools and equipment.  Students will show respect for other students' artworks and ideas.  Students will put best effort forward in all tasks and complete work assigned. Students will not disrupt or otherwise make it impossible for the teacher to teach all students who want to learn.

All assignments given should be written in the student's planner.  Also, I will be posting information about assignments and curriculum on the website.

  • perception of light and shadow (value)
