I am a student at Hmong International Academy or Olson Middle School. The Athletic Director at Patrick Henry is responsible for administering athletics at my school. Does that mean I automatically participate in athletics at Patrick Henry High School?
No. Minneapolis Public Schools does not have what the Minnesota State High School League defines as “continuation schools” or schools that directly lead on to one specific high school (like a school district that has only one high school). Because there are not clearly identified continuation schools, students MUST participate at their “Home Attendance School”. That does not mean the the zone that the student resides in, giving them a choice of high schools to participate at, but their actual home attendance high school. (Please see the resource section to find out what your home attendance school is)
What grade do I have to be in to be eligible to participate at the high school level?
Students who are currently in 7th and 8th grade are eligible to participate in Minnesota State High School League sponsored athletics.
Are there opportunities for 6th graders to play on these teams?
No, Minnesota State High School League sponsored programs are only available to students in grades 7-12. 6th graders will have middle school participation opportunities in soccer and volleyball (fall season), basketball (winter season) and track (spring season) in addition to playing on club teams, Minnesota Amateur Athletic Association teams, and/or Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board teams.
Will there be transportation for middle school students to their home attendance high school?
Game transportation will be provided by District scheduled buses. Additional transportation logistics are in the planning stages and are contingent on the number of middle school students who sign up for each sport. More information will be made available at the beginning of the school year.
What is the participation fee for middle school students participating in high school athletics?
Middle school athletes will be required to pay the high school fees which varies by sport, e.g., $90 for hockey, $70 for tackle football; $60 for all other sports. Reduced fees are available for students who qualify for free and/or reduced lunch ($40 for reduced lunch and $20 for free lunch).
What is the process for registering for high school sports?
Students interested in participating in high school athletics will need a sports physical (which is different from a regular check-up or wellness check), as well as a yearly MSHSL Eligibility form signed by both a parent or guardian and the student. These forms are available in the resource section.
