Semira Appeals For Submissions to Shine On For Jan. 23

semira.jpg

My name is Semira and I am a junior at Patrick Henry High School. I love to draw, or do anything that involves making art. I am a bit of a hipster when it comes to my taste in music because I listen to the Current 24/7. I love playing soccer and watching hockey. I think reading is one of the best ways to fuel your brain—especially when it involves Harry Potter—besides oxygen, of course.I was initially drawn to the Youth Editorial Board because someone recommended me. As I attended more meetings, I learned that YEB provides so many opportunities. I get to meet new people, hear intersting perspectives, and see how every member has grown over the last year. I have learned so much just by working with all the wonderful people on the board, and I cannot wait to share so many more awesome experiences in the years to come.

I hope that by now, each of you are aware of the citywide newspaper Shine On! To reiterate, however, Shine On! is the district-wide student-run newspaper written by and for youth. The newspaper shares the stories and wisdom of our young leaders and highlights the leadership, service and service-learning projects in Minneapolis Public schools and the surrounding community.  Check out our Fall 2012 edition on “What Helps or Harms Your Learning,” and for printed copies, please email us at Takawi.Peters@mpls.k12.mn.us for delivery!

This spring, our theme regards the experienced opportunities and impacts that art has on our lives.  As we continue to grow and expand the opportunities within Shine On!, our Youth Editorial Board (YEB) is seeking to hire new students to join us in the process.  At the intersection of artistic excellence and academic achievement, we are looking to showcase the youth voice and leadership of all K-12 schools in Minneapolis.  Hence we need your support in reviewing, printing, and sharing the attached informational flyers with your day (and after-school) staff, as well as other communities, families, and friends.
