The Legacy
By Feel by Ms. Toedt for November 14th

By Feel
Grandpa calls this time of year the summer doldrums
He is particularly down today.
The eye doctor diagnosed
nothing to be done:
he will soon be blind.
when the hollyhocks lean on each other for support
I remember him reading in his armchair, midnight:
book, magnifying glass—
he cannot read anymore.
and the petunias close their arthritic fists to die.
Grandpa picks beans by feel now,
pushes neon flags in the middle of each plant
so he knows where to water.
Plant stems like thin hair, brown, broken—
I think we will all be happy for the rain.
